The firework code
Fireworks are safe when you use them properly. A few simple rules keep everyone smiling.
Before and during
- Only buy fireworks from licensed retailers, and only fireworks that meet current safety standards.
- Keep fireworks in a closed box. Take them out one at a time and close the box.
- Never put fireworks in your pocket, and never throw them.
- Follow the instructions on each firework. Light at arm’s length, at the end of the fuse.
- Never go back to a lit firework unless the instructions say so.
- Never throw spent fireworks on a bonfire.
- Tell your neighbours, especially if they are elderly or have pets or children, and keep your own pets safe.
The law
You must not set off or throw fireworks, including sparklers, in the street or other public places.
You must not set fireworks off between 11pm and 7am, except:
- Bonfire Night: until midnight
- New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year: until 1am
Sparklers
Sparklers get hotter than cooking oil. They are not toys: never give one to a child under 5, light them one at a time, and wear gloves.
Over half of all firework injuries each year happen to children, so keep them well back.
Not between 11pm and 7am, except on Bonfire Night (until midnight) and on New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year (until 1am). Never in the street or other public places.
Never give a sparkler to a child under 5. Sparklers get hotter than cooking oil: light them one at a time and wear gloves.
